An engine is a rotating mass of moving parts.  The upper and lower parts of the engine are rotated in harmony by either a chain or belt.  Belts are quieter and more economical to build.  But belts can't make it for the long-hall.  They have to be replaced at specific service intervals.  The most popular service intervals are 60,000 or 90,000 miles.  There are some at 105,000 miles.  Belt wear begins to accelerate at these service points and then it will break.  Cold weather, frequent starts, city driving and age all play a role in the longevity of the timing belt.  But if it breaks, it can be as simple as a reinstall or as devastating as a major engine repair.  Check with your technician to see when your timing belt is due.  Have you ever had a timing belt break?
